(C) Heatherwick

British architect Thomas Heatherwick created a spectacular pavillon for the Expo 2010 in Shanghai, which is going to be opened in just a few hours. Although nicknamed Dandelion, we see it as an alien sea urchin. The stings, each 7.5 metres long, act like fibre optic cables, dragging light into the building during the day and glowing at night.
Each of the spikes contains a seed to represent the work done by scientists at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, southwest London, to create a seed bank that will eventually store all the world’s plant species.
